Believing that sleeping late on Sunday mornings and leather baseballs can sometimes both be overrated, our group of easy-going ballplayers from the heart of New York City found itself uniquely alone. Until we learned of the JAANY nanshiki baseball league. What luck for us to find this storied club of baseball enthusiasts––so good-natured and talented, fun-loving and competitive––right here in the Big Apple. But even more lucky was that we were invited to play with them! So, as we begin our maiden year in the JAA Foreign Minister Cup Nanshiki Baseball Tournament, we are honored to have been accepted and we truly appreciate the opportunity. Our team is as diverse as the game of baseball itself. Men and women hailing from all parts of the United States and abroad make up the Chupacabros roster (our unusual name a combination of the fabled woodland creature “Chupacabra” and the English slang for “brothers”) and our level of play can best be described as “they seem to be having a good time” and “sort of know what they’re doing.” “They certainly fill out those uniforms nicely” has also been heard on occasion—not bad, given some of our ages. Additionally, we are blessed to have Naoki-san on our lineup card. His physical talent is only exceeded by his knowledge of baseball and sense of humor. Naoki’s guidance (and translation) will be invaluable as we navigate our way through this terrific season. Fortunately, the language of sportsmanship, honor and friendship is universal, and we “Chupas” are not in short supply.
Let’s play ball!
